FBLA--Identity Theft Presentation

by Beth Manzer

August 24, 2008

The FBLA held their regular monthly meeting for January on the 14th of the month. Members in attendance were given a presentation on the dangers of Identity Theft. Rebecca Schmit, acting Vice President of the FBLA introduced Ms. Morgan Rogers of the State Attorney General's office who gave the presentation.

Ms. Rogers gave a powerful lecture on the dangers of giving out information on the Internet. Her thoughts centered on teen-agers who go online. Even though they might be using a code of some kind to identify themselves to their friends; she showed how easy it was to track an individual down by a predator. Her point was emphasized when everyone thought that a profile she gave ended up to be someone who had been arrested for being a predator.

Statistics given by Ms. Rogers were startling to the FBLA members, parents and teachers who attended the session. Nebraska ranks third in the nation for offenders a surprisingly high ranking.

Questions by the guests were answered by Ms. Rogers at the conclusion of the evening.

Following the seminar, the FBLA held a meeting. Topics of discussion were centered around: State Leadership Conference, FBLA Week, and past community service projects.
