Consumer Class Volunteers

October 20, 2008

Recently, the Consumer class worked on a "Volunteerism" unit.  Their assignment was to "volunteer" for something.  The students thought it would be a good idea to involve the elementary students in their activities.  So ideas started to flow for cleaning up the environment, staying healthy, being safe, and making donations to individuals who needed help.  A schedule was set up to work with the Elementary grades during the remainder of the semester.

During Week One--a Wellness Walk was planned.  The importance of staying healthy was stressed, and a walk was taken by the classes.  At this time, cleaning the environment was also done with a trash pick up.

Week Two--brought about donations for the GoodWill.  Many items were donated through the elementary classrooms.  A carload of clothing, and household items was taken to the Norfolk affiliate of the GoodWill Industries.  The other activity for the week was various board games played by the members of the Consumer class with each elementary grade.

The Third week's activities had students bringing in donations for the local area Pound in Norfolk.  Items included dog food, cat food, chew toys, etc.  The Pound has limited funds, so they appreciated all of the charitable contributions.  The animals that are brought there are held for 72 hours, then they are kept by that facility in an Animal Shelter.  This gives the animals another chance at life.

The final project that the class undertakes will be in conjunction with the Senior Citizen Center.  A breakfast will be provided for members of that organization one week.  The following week, members of the class will wrap Christmas presents for the Senior Citizens.
