District D1 – 7 Osmond Girls over Hartington 50 - 36

D1-7 sub-district championship game at Wausa High School paired the Osmond Tigers with the Hartington Wildcats. The Tigers had beaten the Cats twice earlier this season making the task even tougher.
Hartington opened the game with scoring from 6 different players to build a 16 to 11 point lead after 8 minutes. In the second quarter the defense tighten up allowing 6 points to the Tigers 11 to tie the score at the half at 21 all.
During the third quarter Osmond took the lead on a 3-pointer by Kim Huwaldt and would push the lead to 32 to 29. The Tigers would not trail again. In the fourth quarter ball possession and free throw shooting were key. Osmond hit 9 of 13 from the line . Laurel Krohn and Brianna Kumm combined for 12 of the Tigers 18 points to out distance their opponents 18 to 7 for a final score of 50 to 36.
“The defense really picked up after the first quarter as the girl’s understood what Hartington was trying to do. The same was true on the offensive side as the girls took the ball to the basket and opened up some outside shots” noted Coach Ortmeier. “Give Hartington credit, they have improved every time we played them. Our team played well in an exciting game with great atmosphere. The student section was fantastic!”
Laurel Krohn and Kim Huwaldt led all scorers with 19 and 14 points respectively. Sheila Wiebelhaus let the Cat’s with 10 points. Osmond out rebounded their opponents 34 to 25 with Kristin Gudenkauf having a big game collecting 12 boards. Kim Huwaldt passed off 4 assists and grabbed 6 steals.
The Tigers advance to the District Final to be played on Friday the 26th at Battle Creek High School. They will meet the Elkhorn Valley Falcons for a trip to the State Tournament.
