District D1 – 4 Final : Falcons 63 – Tigers 44

by Joe Ortmeier

March 02, 2010

The Osmond Lady Tigers earned a spot in the D1-4 District Final on Friday the 26th at Battle Creek High School. Osmond would face the Elkhorn Valley Falcons for a trip to the State Tournament in a game that was much closer than the score would indicate.

The Falcons scored off the tip but Osmond answered with a nice post up by Emily Brummels. Elkhorn Valley then pushed the lead to 7 to 4.  After a Tiger time out Laurel Krohn hit a pair of 3-pointers on consecutive trips down the floor to put the Tigers up.  Later in the first she hit another 3 and classmate Brianna Kumm also nailed a triple to bring a close to the first 8 minutes, Tigers ahead 20 to 14.

In the second quarter both defenses picked up trying to take away the other teams strengths.  The Falcons out scored the Tigers 12 to 9 but Osmond maintained the lead of 29 to 26 going into half time.

During the third quarter Ashley Gillilan hit a pair of baskets to hold off Elkhorn Valley.  At the 4:25 mark sophomore Cami Oelsligle hit a 3-pointer to put the Falcons ahead 34 to 33.  Osmond would answer with a basket by Carissa Gutz, but Oelsligle hit another 3 pointer, part of her game high 20 point effort.  Elkhorn Valley out scored the Tigers 20 to 7 to take a 46 to 36 lead into the final 8 minutes.

During the fourth quarter the Tigers tried to drive the ball to the basket, but the size of the Falcons caused problems.  For the game Elkhorn Valley blocked 9 shots.  Senior Kim Huwaldt hit a pair of 3-pointers on consecutive trips down the floor to close the gap to 42 to 48 at the 6:37 mark.  The Tiger defense slowed Oelsligle in the fourth quarter holding her to one 3-point basket, but in doing so opened the post area for 6’ senior Kyleigh Parham who scored 6 points.  The Falcons out scored the Tigers 17 to 8 for a final score of 63 to 44.

Laurel Krohn led the Tigers with 12 points and Cami Oelsligle led all scorers with 20 points.  The Tigers did out rebound the taller Falcons 33 to 24 with Krohn collecting 9 rebounds and Emily Brummels added 7 more.  Laurel also passed off  7 assists.

“The girls played very well in a big game, they started out even better than we had hoped, and never gave up” complimented Coach Joe Ortmeier. “We led the game for two and a half quarters over a very good team.  I’m proud of our effort.  The crowd was great, the band and student section were fantastic again.”
