First Graders are ALL Independent Readers

May 10, 2010

All the students in the First Grade class are Independent Readers.  To become an Independent Reader--each student must reach the 1.3 level books.  When the child becomes an Independent Reader,  he gets to take his Walk of Fame,  receive his certificate, and rainbow star.  Parents and grandparents come to watch , cheer, and get their pictures taken for the child's memory book and the  AR Reading binder.  K-3 students line the hall and sing "Read across America" as the student walks down the hall, and then after receiving his awards and pictures, the student walks back  up the hall, as the K-3 students cheer and clap.  The First Grade class has read over 2,000 books since they started  the AR Program in January.   Parent volunteers have come to listen to the children read before they take their quizzes.  The First Graders appreciate how Mrs. Ketelsen keeps interesting, colorful,-- fiction and nonfiction--books available for them to check out  of the library.
