Gubbels earns second bid to state wrestling
Wrestlers Compete at District Meet
The Osmond wrestlers competed at the District Meet on Friday and Saturday. The Tigers scored eleven points and finished in seventeenth place. Plainview was the team champion followed by Creighton and Southwest.
Paul Gubbels, wrestling at 138 lbs, finished in fourth place and qualified for the state tournament to be held in Omaha starting on Thursday, Feb. 16.
Paul started off the tournament with a pin over Teran Sharman of Palmer in the first round. In the championship quarterfinals Paul won a thrilling come from behind 7-6 decision over Derek Wortman of Creighton to make it to the semi-finals.
In the semi-final round Paul lost by pin to three time state champion Christian Miller of Plainview. Paul then came back to win his next match with a close 4-2 win over James Polen of North Central to make it into the medal rounds.
In the third and fourth place match Paul forfeited to Derek Wortman of Creighton to finish in fourth place and qualify for state.
Paul had a great tournament. We knew coming in that he would have to wrestle well to place in the top four and qualify for state.
Paul had a big quarterfinals match in which he fell behind early but came back to score 6 points in the final minute of action to pull out an important 7-6 decision.
