Jensens place sixth at District Speech
Tigers battle at Districts, Jensen girls sixth with duet
The Osmond Tigers speech team competed in their district speech meet at West Boyd High School in Spencer on Tuesday, March 14.
Jessica and Leslie Jensen (both juniors) earned sixth place in Duet Acting.
The Jensens earned a spot in Finals after finishing fourth (Round 1) and third (Round 2) in their preliminary rounds. (The tournament was formatted with two preliminary rounds to determine who made it into a final round.)
“This was the duet's first time competing in finals and they finished sixth overall, earning them a medal,” Tigers’ Speech Director Christalin Ginn said.
The Tigers scored thirty-one points total including sixteen from Duet Acting, eight points from Oral Interpretation of Serious Prose, and seven points from Extemporaneous Speaking.
Overall, the team finished in eighth place behind seventh place Elkhorn Valley (56).
Aleia Kumm (Jr.) finished just outside of Finals after placing fourth (Round 1) and fifth (Round 2) in her preliminary rounds.
Kumm battled in her preliminary rounds, but was one of three that did not make it into Finals.
“Aleia placed third in the first round, but went over the allotted time, so she fell to fourth,” Ginn said.
The Tigers’ lone Extemporaneous Speaking contestant, Anthony Heiman (So.), had a tough first round as was unable to make it to Finals.
He placed fourth (Round 1) and third (Round 2) in his preliminary rounds.
Ginn was pleased with her speakers’ first round performance: “In the first round, no one scored below a 44 out of 50, which is the best we have done all year.”
Overall, the Tigers (though few in numbers) had a productive year. They improved gradually as the season progressed.
“I am super proud of every single one of them. I have seen them work really hard this year. We earned three more medals than we did last year. This improvement is tremendous,” Ginn added.
