Tigers Down Wildcats and Knights
Tigers Down Wildcats and Knights
BY MADELINE HUWALDT
On September 17 the Osmond Lady Tigers (5-1) traveled to Winside to compete against the Winside Wildcats (6-3) and the Homer Knights (2-10). The Tigers played the first and second games and came out on top both times.
The first opponent the Tigers went up against was the Winside Wildcats. The Lady Tigers won the match after going into three sets 15-25, 25-15, 25-16.
The Tigers had a rough start to the night when they were down 0-4 in the first set to the Wildcats. This lack of energy in the first few points caused the Tigers to not have enough momentum to catch back up with the Wildcats.
After suffering a hard loss in the first set, the hopes for the Tigers to become victorious were slim but the girls pushed back harder than ever against the Wildcats and started out strong enough to shut down their opponents across the net
The Tigers were able to get their hands on every ball the hitter hit at the net and then the passers were able to get passes up to the Tiger’s setter for long rallies and hard-earned points to come out with a win.
At the start of the third sets the Tigers looked as though they were going to fall into the rut they had during the first set when they were down 1-7, but the Tigers were able to come back within three points at 7-10.
From that point on the third set was close until the Tigers tied the match at sixteen and took over for a set and match win.
The starters for the match were seniors Kennedy Johnson (OH) and Madeline Huwaldt (MH), junior Elisa Herrera (L), sophomores Kiera Moes (MH), Grace Gansebom (S), Bailey Schmit (RH), and Macy Aschoff (OH).
Johnson led the Tigers in kills with twelve followed by Aschoff with three, Moes with two, Huwaldt with one, and Gansebom with one.
Gansebom had eleven set assists on the night.
Johnson, Huwaldt, and Schmit all had two solo blocks a piece on the night.
Aschoff and Schmit led the Tigers in ace serves with two apiece followed by Johnson with one.
Schmit led the team in digs with ten followed by johnson with eight, Aschoff with seven, Gansebom with four, and Herrera with two.
Osmond (6-1) then went into their second game of the night against Homer (2-10) where they got their second win of the night in two sets 25-23, 25-17.
The Tigers and Knights both came out strong at the start of the first set keeping the set close until point twenty-five.
The Knights had a tall middle blocker, so the Tigers had to scan the floor to find holes to tip the ball into, which is exactly what they did.
During the second set, the Tigers came out fighting and ready to end the night and gain another win for their record.
There were many tough serves and smart plays from the Tigers which helped gain momentum for the Tigers to take control of the ball and win the match.
Aschoff led the team in kills with seven followed by Huwaldt and Moes each with five, Johnson with four, and Schmit and Gansebom each with one.
Gansebom had fifteen set assists during this match.
Moes led the Tigers in solo blocks with three followed by Johnson and Huwaldt who each had one.
Gansebom had two ace serves followed by Johnson, Aschoff, and Schmit who each had one.
Johnson led the Tigers in digs with six followed by Herrera with four and Gansebom, Aschoff, and Schmit who each had one.
The final match of the night was Homer vs Winside where Winside came out on top in two sets.
Osmond’s (7-1) next matches will be against Neligh-Oakdale (4-4) and Battle Creek (11-1) on September 24 in triangular hosted in Battle Creek.
The order of games on September 24 is Battle Creek vs Neligh-Oakdale, Neligh-Oakdale vs Osmond, Osmond vs Battle Creek with the first match starting at 5:00 pm.
