Girls JH girls fall in season opener
The Osmond Tigers junior high girls basketball team started its games today against the Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats.
The “A” team lost 23-7 and the “B” team won 12-2.
“Overall, it was a good day for our girls,” Tigers Coach Scott Morrison said. “Yes, we’ve got some improving to do, but our girls did some nice things.”
In the A game, the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. The Wildcats tied the game at 3-3 to end the third quarter.
In the second quarter the Tigers added another five points while holding the Tigers scoreless.
The Wildcats outscored the Tigers 6-2 in the third quarter to take a 14-5 lead into the fourth quarter. They knocked down three 3-pointers to outscore the Tigers 9-2 in the final quarter.
Cali Gutz (8th, G) led the Tigers with four points. Callie Hoffman (7th, F) added two points, and Tessa Gardner hit a free-throw.
“The cool part about what I saw today was that we look to share the ball. Our girls tried to get the ball to their teammates in the paint. That’s going to pay off for them down the road.”
Eighth graders Leia Buchanan (G) and Reese Johns (F) both had solid performances. They took a big step forward from where they were as seventh graders.
“These girls didn’t get a ton of opportunities last year, so to see them come on to the court and play the way they did was encouraging,” Morrison said.
Caydence Krienert (7th, G/F), Callie Hoffman, Anna Kahny (7th, G), Tessa Gardener (7th, F), Anabelle Vinson, and Julianna Kumm (7th, F) all got their first experience with junior high basketball.
“I was really exited to see where these girls get by the end of the season,” Morrison said. “As they spend more and more time on the court, they will continue to get more and more comfortable with the fundamentals and making decisions.”

In the B game, the Tigers stepped up their game and won 12-2. The Tigers were down 2-0 but scored twelve consecutive points.
Caydence Krienert scored a game high six points. Callie Hoffman added two points along with Tessa Gardner and Anna Kahny.
“The B game was a nice change of pace,” Morrison said. “Our girls were aggressive defensively; they ran the court, drove to the hoop, and found ways to get the ball in the hoop.”
Anabelle Vinson hustled and was tough with the ball. At one point she ran down a loose ball by sliding feet first near the sideline. Then she found Hoffman on a nice high-low pass.
Juliana Kumm had a nice game with a great rebound and a couple nice shots.
“I am definitely excited about this group!” Morrison said. “They are good kids; they spend time taking extra reps; they listen, and they have fun playing with each other.”
The Tigers play next on Thursday at home against the Wausa Vikings.
