Tigers third in Cedar 7th grade tourney
HARTINGTON—The Osmond Tigers junior high club basketball team finished third at the Cedar Catholic Booster Club Tournament on Saturday, January 25 in Holy Trinity Gym.
The Tigers got three games in starting with a 33-3 win over a younger Hartington Public team. They fell in the second game to Wynot 22-21, and defeated a younger Hartington Cedar Catholic team 23-20.
In the first match, the Tigers ousted Hartington Public 33-3. Several players had good games including Lillie Gansebom (7th, F), Jozie Kumm (8th, F), and Sam DeLaCruz (8th, F) who all played most the second half.
DeLaCruz had a nice look to the hoop in the game.
In the second game, the Tigers held a lead all but the last minute of the game. With the score notched at 21-21(:00.9 left in the game), a Wynot forward hit a free-throw to win the game.
Jumping off to a great start in the first half, the Tigers had a marginal lead. In the second half; however, Wynot put on full court, man-to-man pressure.
While the Tigers never lost control of ball much, the Wynot pressure forced the Tigers out of their offensive rhythm, and they were not able to produce much in the half.
Also, the Tigers were only 3-of-8 from the free-throw line in the half and were just 5-for-14 (36%)from the line overall.
Riley Wagner (7th, G/F) had a great hustle play in the game as she outran a Wynot dribbler to keep her from scoring on a layup.
Hayle Krienert (8th, F) had a nice effort; she had a team-high 13 points. Kiera Moes (7th, G/F) had four points.
Grace Gansebom (7th, G) had three of the Tigers’ seven second half points. Elisa Herrera (8th, G) had two points.
Lillie Gansebom had a nice rebound in the game. DeLaCruz had another nice look at the hoop too.
In their third game, the Tigers proved their mettle by outlasting Hartington Cedar Catholic (HCC) 23-20. They didn’t start so well, but responded and adjusted as the game wore on.
Elisa Herrera’s (8th, G) six second half points were big in the contest. Her classmate Lexi Beacom (8th, F) scored four points.
Beacom had a nice hustle play as she saved the ball from going out-of-bounds on the press break.
Wagner had a big game with two nice baskets and several hard-fought offensive rebounds.
Kiera Moes had the Hustle Play of the Tournament against HCC when she exerted full effort/extension to save a possession for the Tigers.
Kumm hit a free-throw. It was good to have her back after she wasn’t able to play the last two tournaments.
The Tigers move on to the Plainview’s Booster Club Tournament where they face Niobrara-Verdigre (12:00p.m.), Creighton (1:30pm), and Plainview (3:00pm) on Sunday, March 5 in Plainview.
