Tigers face Blue Devils, Wildcats in St. Rose Tourney

By Morrison, Scott on February 01, 2020

CROFTON—The Osmond Tigers junior high girls basketball team participated in the St. Rose of Lima
Junior High Basketball Tournament on Saturday, February 1 in the Crofton Elementary gym.
The Tigers played well throughout the day and are visibly improving.
They started the tournament against Wynot, which led to the highlight of the day: Jamie Gubbels scored
her first two points of the season.
“Jamie did a great job coming into the game and making a basket,” Tigers Coach Scott Morrison said.
“Our girls, Wynot’s girls, and Wynot’s coach Steve Wieseler all deserve credit for making the situation
possible.”
For the majority of the game, Wynot held control of the score, but the Tigers made it really interesting
at times.
After Wynot bolted out to a 10-0 lead, the Tigers came back in dramatic fashion with a 7-0 run.
The Blue Devils outscored the Tigers 8-3 in the second quarter to take an 18-10 lead. However, it was
the third quarter that made a big difference in the game.
In the third, the Blue Devils outscored the Tigers 12-4.
Callie Hoffman scored four of her team high eight points in the quarter. Hoffman had eight rebounds to
go along with this.
The Tigers had a great fourth quarter, holding the Blue Devils to just two points in the quarter.
Meanwhile, the Tigers scored nine points, two of which were Gubbels’s points at the end of the game.
“I was really happy with our defensive performance, especially in the fourth quarter,” Morrison said. “It
was one of our best so far this year.”
Julianna Kumm also had a great game; she scored two points and had eight rebounds.
Belle Vinsion continued her consistent play as she scored three points, secured six rebounds, and added
three assists.

Keely Gubbels and Keely Gubbels each saw action at the end of the first and second quarters.
The Tigers turned around to play Hartington-Newcastle in the third-fourth place game. The Tigers fell
after a valiant effort 27-15.

After competing very well with the Wildcats through three quarters of the game, the Wildcats went on a
12-2 run through the fourth quarter to seal victory.
The Tigers their first lead since the Wausa game at 6-5 after the first quarter. They were down just 11-9
at halftime, and they were down just 15-13 at the end of the third quarter.
“This was a much more competitive game than the last time we this team,” Morrison said. “Our girls are
getting better all the time!”
Belle Vinson and Callie Hoffman each scored four points. Vinson had thirteen rebounds, while Hoffman
added three rebounds and three steals.
Gansebom, Kahny, and Wagner each added two points. Gansebom added four rebounds and an assist.
Wagner had four rebounds, two deflections and an assist.
Gardner hit a free-throw while also securing two rebounds. Julianna Kumm had two rebounds, two
assists, and a deflection.
Brianna Kumm played as a guard.

Thanks to Coach Terry Viterna for dedicating his time to help the girls. We also appreciate his willingness
to take stats.
